MY STORY

As a young kid I was diagnosed with Asperger’s. My particular form affects language and thus verbal communication is difficult. I process most thoughts and ideas in mental images, I have strong visual recall.

It was difficult for me to maintain friendships as I could not participate in the “chit chat” and teenage banter. I developed an interest in photography around the age of 10 years. This skill allowed me to participate in many activities and I was assigned the task of school photographer for most events.

I had great support from teachers and facilitators which got me through the school system with a fair matric (final school exams). A special art teacher, who took time to understand me, encouraged me and instilled confidence in my work. In my final year art exhibition I, for the first time was able to expressed the frustration.
